The align tool in After Effects is limited, unpredictable, and missing core functionality. So, we reimagined it.

We’ve introduced distributing layers with precise spacing, aligning to key layers, to title & action safe zones, to masks, to anchor points, and even to the outside edges of the composition.

But, we think the best feature by far is the ability to align layers as groups — this means no more hacky workarounds getting caught in a web of parents and nulls.

In short, everything you’d expect from Illustrator’s Align panel is now possible in After Effects, and then some.

01 Align to key layer

A much-loved Adobe Illustrator feature comes to After Effects. Align or distribute layers to key layers. Just select the key layer first, followed by the layers that you want to align.

02 Align layers in groups

You can now align multiple layers together as if they’re in an invisible group. That’s it — there’s not much more to say on the matter.

03 Mask detection

Choose whether to take masks into consideration when aligning or distributing layers.

04 Distribute spacing

Distribute layers using exact distances between each one. Just type the spacing amount, in pixels, into the box before distributing.

05 Paragraph text detection

Choose whether to align and distribute text layers as point text, or paragraph (area) text. Choosing paragraph text takes into account a layer’s full bounding box.

06 Customizable panel

For those who don’t like to clutter up their workspace, the panel has three layout options — default, vertical and horizontal. You can also make it your own by toggling elements on or off and choosing your own accent color.
